Gee, That’s a Funny Domain Name.

July 10, 2006 at 11:00 am by Designer Ella

That’s what somebody might say about my first fashion blog started when I didn’t have a clue, Kiss Me, Stace (www.kissmestace.com).

Sure, it’s successful with its name (a recent Google PR rise!) and partly because I did stick with it. But I often regret a silly titling choice.

I started the blog without even a domain name. I really had no idea I would come to love it or fashion blogging so.

It takes some explaining for anyone to get it. I even have to reason with myself to like it anymore (and for quite some time). (Oh, I just saw one of my first-viewed What Not to Wear episodes, in which Stacy said, “kiss me, Clinton!” That might have been in my subconscious [it’s so meaningful]. when the idea struck me.) It’s also intellectual, having come from “Kiss Me Kate,” which was a movie based on Shakespeare. Well, that’s me!

What does it all matter when people don’t know?

And … some people assume my name is “Stace.” (Arggh.) Would I want to kiss myself? Geez! That brings up the issue over whether I want to kiss Stacy London. No, and she scares me, it’s more about hoping she would approve of my dressing. (She’s really scary, it’s “ironic” you see. :-P)

One major point is that it doesn’t scream out “fashion blog,” and I have had to do some serious SEO work to compensate for that (it has worked, thanks Google rise!!).

I even have reasoned it with blog content. I’ve made sure to include fashion “rules” (something from the show) on the site. It’s something I’m actually happy to do. (I didn’t steal the idea, no! ;-)) And it’s really a thing that helps a site move along throughout tiring days and weeks: a definite subject. This even means there’s always a hope for it in the future, even if/when it’s co-run by others (I’m going to train my mums to blog, I think she might be great for it).

Still, if I had a chance to start over, I would have … well, it would be this blog’s domain. (Though do you know designerella.com [no hyphen] was snatched up by the time I first had these concerns and is being auctioned, currently, at insane prices? Major major, double double [Chex Chex] GRR!)

So, with *secret* dreams and hopes, and to settle my stomach and hope for the best ending for myself, I’ve started this site. It’s shopping and fashion with a personal blog twist. I feel like you should get to know me!

(Now, don’t worry. With all the new thousands of Google hits, I’m so not leaving Kiss Me, Stace.)

This post was partly inspired by Darren Rowse’s ProBlogger prompt (but mostly by the constant nagging in my head). It is now being submitted to his Group Writing Project on starting blogging over with now-known information.

You know tho, a unique domain name helps people remember you out of all these blogs ;).

Designer Ella Says:

That’s true. Thanks a lot Mama D. Then one might still worry about typing it correctly, being the slightly difficult name it is.

I do feel fine about it, though. Starting this blog has made me feel better, I really did want to stake a net claim in my nickname with a domain! (Whoa, the rhyming.)

Hee hee hee.

Matthew Bennett Says:

I think that’s a great name and although it doesn’t make me think of fashion, it’s very easy to remember.

Leon Says:

Nice blog. I normally detest fashion blogs, but yours is different.

Stefan Says:

Hi Ella,
there are a lot of domain names out there which are definitely impossible to remember or to type in without making mistakes. So your’s is ok, I think.

Designer Ella Says:

Thanks Matthew.

Thanks Leon, heh heh.

And thanks Stefan. You know I always test out new domain names by typing them in a bunch of places.

And thanks for visiting from ProBlogger, everyone! My blogs might be different from a lot of yours, but I do it full time! (Aside from school, which is part of my excuse for no other job.) And I’m trying to make it a real and lucrative business. It’s coming along at a fine pace.

Thom Says:

I think a domain name says, or should say, a lot about what to expect at a site. Mine is sort of generic, digitalthom.com, but I really am into all things digital, so it seemed to be the right thing. Great site.

You seem to have learned your lesson.

Of the 25 posts listed at one of the problogger roundups on this topic, yours was the first one I clicked through to.

Reason was the title of your post (”Gee, That’s a Funny Domain Name.”) let me know what you were going to say. Most others at that link don’t.

Designer Ella Says:

Thank you very much! Mine was the last on the page, too. I kept Darren’s advice in mind. I found the 2nd round-up’s titles to be a little bit more interesting, anyway.
